What I Learned from Sonny Chiba
I bought a 3-disc Bruce Lee DVD about a year ago. One of the disc contained three 1970’s movies starring a Japanese actor named Sonny Chiba. Chiba plays Takuma (Terry in the English dub) Tsurugi. These movies were The Street Fighter, Return of the Street Fighter, and Sister Street Fighter.
They were chock full of violence and gore.
I loved them; especially the first two.
Takuma is a man with 9 lives. Just when his enemies think he is dead or at least mortally wounded, he finds inner strength to bounce back despite agonizing pain and discomfort.
He seems to go on IN SPITE of them. The inevitability of their impending demise is the catalyst for him to stand up and triumph in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.
This little lesson encourages me to keep moving forward regardless of what’s going on around me.
Oh, yeah. I later found out that he played Hattori Hanzo (the revered sword making guy) in Quentin Tarentino’s Kill Bill.
Neat.
